A painkiller used for back pain could be related to a higher risk of slight cognitive dementia and cognitive impairment (MCI), according to new research.

The study, published online in Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine, found that previously considered groups too young to develop conditions were more than double the risk of taking Gabapentina.

“Our results indicate an association between the prescription of Gabapentina and dementia or cognitive deterioration within ten years,” the research team said in a statement.

Researchers have become more and more popular for treating chronic pain, especially neuropathic (nervous) pain, said in a statement.

Gabapentine, which is also used to control convulsions, according to Cleveland Clinic, has relatively low addictive potential compared to traditional opioids.

Recent research has caused new concerns about its side effects, including a possible association with neurodegeneration.

The above findings could not confirm a specific link, especially if certain age groups are more vulnerable.

In the latest study, the researchers collected data from Trinetx, a health research network containing electronic health records from 68 healthcare organizations in all the United States.

Examining anonymous records of adult patients, the team examined groups that had been prescribed Gabapentin for chronic back pain between 2004 and 2024 and compared them with people who did not receive the drug. There were a total of 26,414 individuals in each group.

The researchers counted factors such as demographics, coexisting conditions and the use of other medicines that create pain.

Patients who had received six or more gabapentine recipes had 29% more likely to be diagnosed with dementia and 85% more likely to diagnose MCI within ten years of the initial diagnosis of pain, according to the study.

Taking into account specific age groups, people between the ages of 18 and 64 received the drug had more than twice as likely to develop any of the conditions that Gabapentin had not been prescribed.

Although there was no higher risk between the ages of 18 and 34 years old, the risk of dementia doubled (and the risk of MCI more than tripled) among children 35 to 49 years.

Researchers observed a similar pattern between the ages of 50 and 64.

The risks increased frequently of prescription: patients with 12 or more recipes had 40% more likely to develop dementia and 65% more likely to develop MCI than those who were prescribed Gabapentina three to 11 times.

The study had some limitations. As an observational study, firm conclusions could not be drawn from the cause and the effect, researchers said.

They also acknowledged that since the study was retrospective, they could not take into account the dose or duration of the use of Gabapentina.

The results “support the need to closely control Gabapentine prescribed adult patients to evaluate potential cognitive decrease,” added researchers.
